Job hunting is more than just signing up to job search portals, and submitting your resume to all available jobs you’re interested in.

This may be what most job seekers know.

But what we’ll share with you today are smart tips that will make your job search more targeted, effective, and result-driven.

Are you ready to find the right job for you? Follow these job search tips you may not have heard before but will definitely produce amazing results.

Australia Job Search Tips

  1. Use Boolean Search
  2. Use Job Portals Wisely
  3. Reach Out to Headhunters in Australia
  4. Update Your Online Profiles
  5. Use CV scanning apps

1. Use Boolean Search on Job Portals

Here’s a good guide on how to use Boolean operators to pick out the right jobs, quickly.

For example, if I’m looking for marketing jobs, in a director role, for FMCG companies, I’d use the search string:
“FMCG” AND “Marketing” AND “Director”

If you want to avoid any specific keywords, you can use the “-” sign. For example, if you want to avoid job ads from Nestle, you can use:
“FMCG” AND “Marketing” AND “Director” -Nestle

If you’re still not sure about this, drop us an email and we’ll walk you through how to do it for your specific use case.

2. Use Job Portals Wisely

There are so many job search websites all over the Internet, and they’re usually pretty easy to use.

But… when you do, use them smartly and selectively.

IMPORTANT! Avoid using job aggregators like Indeed.

These aggregators do not submit your CV to employers. Instead, they hold your CV and ask employers to pay to view it. Naturally, almost all employers will not pay. So your CV ends up in a black hole.

If you do see a job ad you like on an aggregator, copy that job ad and search for it on Google. It’ll usually turn up on another job portal like JobStreet. Best to apply directly there.

For senior roles, Linkedin is the best. Learn the best way to find a job through LinkedIn.

3. Reach Out to Headhunters in Australia

The idea of using headhunters to find a job may sound intimidating to some, but truth is, they’re there to connect job seekers to the jobs available for them.

Reach out to them via phone call or email. Trust me, they don’t bite.

If you need some headhunters, here’s a list of headhunters in Australia categorised by industry, as well as Australia’s top recruitment agencies and executive search firms. We’re constantly updating these lists so check back often.

4. Update Your Online Profiles

It’s really important to update your individual job portals with all your skills.

Uploading an updated CV is not enough as it won’t make you “searchable” by recruiters.

LinkedIn has the most number of headhunters searching for candidates. That’s why it’s so important to have an updated and optimised LinkedIn profile.

To avoid your network (and your colleagues!) being informed of updates to your profile, you can uncheck the box “Update my network” at the bottom of the update pop-up.

5. Use CV scanning apps

If you see any open jobs, don’t apply to it just yet.

Use CV scanning apps like JobScan and CareerHero to help you optimise your CV with the right keywords similar to the open job. This will help your CV get past those dreaded ATS CV Scanners.

Incorporate the keywords contextually into the sentences in the CV.

IMPORTANT! Do not use a list of keywords at the end.

Adding in the keywords, for each job ad, massively helps in getting it past those automated CV scanners. This will increase the chances of your CV being read by a human.

Conclusion

I know some of this might be a bit overwhelming! Alas, the job search process is made up of so many moving parts, not just the CV.
